Counseling & Psychotherapy Services

My Orientation

I offer psychotherapy for adults, couples, and older adolescents. In my practice, I combine several therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavior, humanistic, existential and gestalt therapies. However, I primarily work within the framework of cognitive behavior therapy.

In individual counseling and psychotherapy, as my client, you might explore feelings and assumptions/beliefs about yourself, others, and the world around you, and learn how such beliefs can color your mood and interfere with your emotional well being.

You may also learn how such beliefs can influence, develop, and sustain your relational and behavioral patterns, which are pervasive and often problematic. We will also try to understand the underlying issues of your deep-seated beliefs and work to change them. In addition, you will experiment and learn effective communication and interpersonal skills, which will most likely increase your self efficacy and help build your self esteem.

I also incorporate solution focused brief therapy techniques. In the large portion of our work together, we will focus on “here and now” and the future, rather than the past (“there and then”). I will help you identify your strengths and utilize them effectively. We will set our goals together, and they will guide our work. Between the sessions, you might be given a homework assignment (if you are ready and willing).

As you see, my work in general tends to be collaborative and action oriented. However, some clients may realize that I am not working in quite the same manner as I described above. It’s because I am sensitive to each person’s needs, problems, and personality and adjust my approach accordingly.

In Couples Counseling, our work will involve facilitating discussion of difficult issues, coaching in communication skills, exploring each partner’s family background to better understand the possible roots of the current problems.

Some of the common issues I work with include:

  • Work Stress
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Career Concerns
  • Relationship Difficulties with Family Members, Partners, Colleagues, Friends
  • Self Esteem, Feelings of Inferiority/Inadequacy
  • Life Transitions (e.g., leaving home, separation, marriage, divorce)
  • Loneliness
  • Eating Problems/Body Image
  • Loss & Grief
  • Interpersonal/Communication Skills Building
  • Alcohol and Drug Problems
  • Unwanted Habits
  • Identity Issues: Developmental, Sexual, Racial
  • Cross Cultural Relationship Difficulties
